The studio Gonzo was created in 1992 by a small team of creative people: Shinji Higuchi, Meada Mahiro, Showji Murahama (the actual CEO) and Hirosho Yamaguchi. The name of the studio comes from the meaning of Gonzo in Italian, it means rebel. Their first project was an hour animated sequence for a late SEGA game system, the Saturn, that game was called: Lunar Silver Star Story. Their work was brilliant and they start getting more and more contacts for another jobs in 1996. Their firs OAV project came out in 1998 with the help of Bandai and EMI, it was Ao no Rokugo (Blue Submarine Number 6). Right after, they made : Year 1999 : Melty Lancer Year 2000 : Gate Keepers and Vandread Year 2001: Final Fantasy Unlimited, Hellsing, Real Bout High School, Vandread : The Second Stage and I wish you were Here Year 2002: Sentou Yousei Yukikaze, Choujuushin Gravion, Saishuu Heiki Kanojo, Full Metal Panic!, Gate Keepers 21 et Kiddy Grade Year 2003 : Last Exile, Kaleidostar, Gad Guard, Peacemaker Kurogane and Chrno Crusade Year 2004 : Choujuushin Gravion Zwei, Samurai 7 and Spirit (movie) Gonzo is a well known studio thanks to their incredible 2D and 3D works, the interaction between those 2 animation standards is a really piece of art. If you add some talented directors, character designers, 3D artists and many others, you'll understand why this studio is one the most successful and popular studio in Japan.
